Davis Programs: A Short Overview

READY FOR ACTION
READY FOR ACTION

Davis Dyslexia Correction® Programs address far more than "just" dyslexia. They grew out of Ron Davis's experience with his own severe learning challenges. After decades of struggle, through keen self-observation, and later on through systematic research, he discovered that he could remove the obstacles that had previously barred him from many academic fields. Then he carefully retraced the steps that had led him to success. As it turned out, this sequence of steps was more than an individual path: It became the foundation for a methodology that proved equally effective for others. Since then, Davis methods and the Davis Programs have been refined into precise tools for mastering a variety of learning problems:

The Major Hindrances:

•reading-dyslexia or near-dyslexia

•spelling-dyslexia or near-dyslexia

•handwriting-dyslexia or near-dyslexia (dysgraphia)

•auditory-dyslexia or near-dyslexia (auditory processing)

•comprehension-dyslexia or near-dyslexia

•math-dyslexia or near-dyslexia (dyscalculia)

•coordination-dyslexia or near-dyslexia (dyspraxia)

•attention-dyslexia or near-dyslexia (ADD/ADHD)

The Davis Dyslexia Correction® Program

The fundamental Davis Dyslexia Correction Program is often called the "Reading Program," but it covers a wide range of skills (no less than six of the major hindrances listed above). It provides clients with the tools needed for mastering the whole field of language arts. The target areas include overall focus (known as Orientation), reading comprehension, listening comprehension, auditory fine-tuning, handwriting or printing, spelling, Davis Symbol Mastery™ including Word Mastery, composition, organizing thoughts, putting thoughts on paper and more (depending on the goals the client wishes to achieve).

The Davis Math Mastery™ Program

As all Davis Programs, the Davis Math Mastery Program begins with Orientation, a technique designed to sharpen a person's focus and to achieve sustained attention. Next is a series of twelve hands-on exercises that clear up any confusion about the nature of the four basic processes of arithmetic. The concepts underlying mathematical procedures are then "made real" by means of clay models created by the student herself. From here the program branches out to cover specific areas and difficulties identified by the client, such as fractions, decimals, algebra etc....

The Davis Attention Mastery™ Program

Attention deficit in its various forms has grown into a major concern for educators and parents. It affects both boys and girls and continues as adult ADD in about two-thirds of the cases. The Davis approach steers clear of drugs and avoids the head-on approach of behavior modification. Instead, it relies and on a host of gentle techniques. The Davis Attention Mastery Program begins with Orientation, an effective tool for strengthening the ability to focus....

Many people see dyslexia and near-dyslexia only in connection with reading and writing. In actual fact, the disorientation that causes dyslexia can ruin a student's academic success in many different areas, including math and sciences, social studies, and more. In the form of ADD, it can also express itself in social and behavioral issues.

Five Faces of Dyslexia

DYSLEXIA AND NEAR-DYSLEXIA: Used colloquially, these terms are usually understood to cover only reading, writing, and spelling. In the Davis sense, they include all academic and behavioral problems sprouting from a single root: disorientation.. Dyslexia and near-dyslexia often involve confusion about basic concepts (time, sequence, consequence, order...).

DYSCALCULIA: The mathematical version of dyslexia and near-dyslexia; the dyscalculic will often understand mathematical concepts; he may even be able to mysteriously come up with answers, but cannot provide the "paper trail" from question to solution. Dyscalculia is addressed through the Davis Math Mastery Program.

DYSGRAPHIA: An aspect of dyslexia "specializing" in handwriting problems; commonly involves difficulties with letters containing diagonals (e.g. K, M, N, W, Y, Z, or k, w, y, z), but can also involve any other letter; penmanship appears chaotic; much confusion between upper and lower case, and between printed and cursive style. Where dysgraphia is present, it can be addressed as part of the Davis Dyslexia Correction Program (the "Reading Program).

DYSPRAXIA: Ron Davis has called it "the clumsy cousin" of dyslexia; many dyslexics and near-dyslexics excel in sports, manual skills, mechanical skills etc.; the dyspraxic struggles with balance, dexterity, coordination, hand and eye co-ordination etc. Generally, the basic Davis Dyslexia Correction Program will take care of dyspraxia.

ATTENTION DEFICIT: Known variously as ADD or ADHD, this form of disorientation occurs in boys and girls as well as adults. As defined by the DSM-IV, it comes in three shades: primarily inattentive type, primarily hyperactive type, and mixed type. Although the Davis Dyslexia Correction Program alone can already do much to alleviate ADD (by means of Orientation, the Energy Dial, and other tools), attention deficit usually calls for an additional and separate program, known as the Davis Attention Mastery Program.
